The Russian History Department (in the past — the Department of History of the Peoples of the USSR, later — the Department of History of the USSR) was founded in 1932, with the creation of the Arkhangelsk Evening Pedagogical Institute (since 1939 — the Arkhangelsk State Pedagogical Institute). Korotaev, were among the main staff of the Department.

Today the Department carries out research and educational activities, works on patriotic education. Conferences, seminars and round tables are regularly held, and close cooperation is maintained with archives, museums, educational and cultural institutions. Teachers of the Department give public lectures; they are involved as experts in leading scientific journals and in mass media.

The general research theme of the department is “Russia in the history and culture of the Euro-Arctic region.” Teachers, students and post-graduates of the Department work on a wide range of topics related to the history of the European North of Russia and the Arctic.
