The Institute of Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering (Sevmashvtuz) as a part of Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov was established on 1 July 2012 based on the branch «SEVMASHVTUZ» of FSFEI HPE «State Marine Technical University of St. Petersburg» in Severodvinsk .

Currently, The Institute of Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering is a leading educational institution of Severodvinsk’s scientific educational cluster of NArFU and the only in the Far North of European part of Russia institution of Higher education with wide technical profile providing training of specialists for enterprises of JSC "United shipbuilding Corporation" in the fields of shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, tool engineering, Economics and management of shipbuilding production.

Established in 1965, Sevmashvtuz during all the years of its existence trained specialists for the shipbuilding industry by a unique system of education — the "Plant-University" which is a combination of theoretical study and production work of students at the basic enterprises in accordance with the profile of specialty or direction of training.

For the period from 1965 to present, Sevmashvtuz has trained technical personnel to ensure the needs of production in the field of military shipbuilding and marine engineering for civilian use.

Today, graduates of Sevmashvtuz occupy leading positions in the shipbuilding industry.

The institute adopted a multi-level system of training.

Our graduates receive state diplomas. The training is done by full-time (day), part-time (evening) and correspondence courses. Students with secondary education of corresponding profile can use accelerated programs.

The institute comprises 4 educational and laboratory buildings, a sports complex and a student dormitory. The entire area of all buildings is more than 30,000 square meters. The institute is equipped with modern hardware. There are more than 300 personal computers which are interconnected in a computer network that is integrated into the global network “Internet”. There is also a modern language laboratory, copiers, digital projectors and multimedia classrooms.

The university provides dormitory placement to nonresident entrants (for the period of entrance exams) and full-time students.

The main goal of our institution is to become a center of innovative and technological development in the Arctic. The Institute of Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering is going to become a training center for world-class specialists in designing, manufacturing and repairing of ships and high-tech marine equipment. Profound knowledge that the students get should make a great contribution to technological breakthrough in Russian shipbuilding.

The institution is a successor of Sevmashvtuz, a branch of State Marine Technical University of St. Petersburg that had been providing highly qualified staff for the world’s largest shipbuilding industrial complexes.

Succession and development – this is our motto! We managed to retain all the faculty, the unique system of engineering education – “Plant – University”, educational and scientific traditions of Sevmashvtuz, that has become part of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University – the national project of modernization and innovative development of modern engineering education.
